"Budgie Flaps As Richie Corners Him"

July 5, 2017

Humberside's Lee Budgeon, in his first York Darts Promotions event final, found the experience of

York's well traveled Richie Corner too hot to handle as he went down 5-0 in the Streamline Taxis York Open Darts Championship Ranking Event 12 final.

Corner, who only dropped one leg all day, produced legs of 17-20-18-16 and 14 darts in the final to whitewash a young but talented Budgeon.

Budgeon (15)  hit 2 x 180's in 4-2 win over Leon Bailey in the first semi-final whilst Corner (12-17-20-14) including a 180 and 156 finish ended Andy Coopers hopes of a first YDP final appearance.

In the 1/4 Finals Budgeon defeated Andy Walshaw 3-2 the same result in Cooper's victory over Andy Harland, both players having 2 x 21 dart legs. Bailey whitewashed Alan Graham as did Corner against Ian Atkin.

Last 16 results were as follows: Budgeon 3 Shaun Rutter 2, Walshaw (19-19) 3 Andy Hanks 2, Graham 3 Lee Mason 1, Bailey (15-13) 3 Graham Elvidge (21) 1, Cooper 3 Mark McLoughlin 0, Harland (17) 3 Dave Lord 0, Atkin 3 Scott Jackson (18-17) 2 and Corner (16-20-21) 3 Trevor Day 0.

The prize for the Furthest Lady was split between Sherry Stockdale, Jo Hodges and Gill Vine with the Furthest Youth (under 18) shared by Adam Pearce and Jamie Atkinson.

A total of 57 legs of 21 darts or less were recorded on the day which included 14 x 180's and 5 ton plus finishes. Chris Quantock and Richie Corner hit 3 x 180's a piece with Graham Elvidge and Lee Budgeon bagging a deuce. Dave Lord, Scott Jackson, Neil Hart, Andy Walshaw and Ian Atkin all had one each.

The prize for the Highest Checkout of the day went to Tony Pearce shooting out on 160 closely followed by Richie Corner 156. Liam Blows hit a 108 and 116 finish and Steve Vine closed on 107.

The winners of the Blind Pairs event were Jim Gordon and Graham Elvidge who beat Trevor Holtby and Shaun Rutter with Lee Mason/Scott Jackson and Richie Corner/Graham Day losing out in the Semi-finals.
