Chris Hornby's journey down from Middlesbrough proved a fruitful one as he won his first YDP title
defeating York's Stuart Limbert in the final of the Streamline Taxis York Open Darts Championships Ranking Event 5 organised in Association with Red Dragon Darts and York Print.
Hornby checked out with legs of 16-18-21 and 17 against Limbert's 20 to record a 5-3 victory with both players hitting maximums in the final but the story of the day must be the continued rise in the form of young man called Leighton Bennett from Lincoln.
Bennett made history when he became the youngest ever male to grace the BICC County stage when he played in the February Premier Division match between Lincolnshire and Devon aged just 11 years and 1 month.
He then followed that by getting through to the Ranking Event 5 Semi-final going down to eventual winner Hornby (16-18-18-17 plus 180 score) 4-3. Bennett added two 180's of his own and his winning legs of 19-16-17 were very creditable.
In the other Semi-final Limbert defeated Harrogate's Alex Pride 4-2.
The 1/4 Final results saw Hornby take a 3-2 win over James Weldon, the same result Bennett had over Cameron Spiller and as did Limbert (21-20-19) over Alan Graham (19). Pride (20-21-20) beat Neil Milton (18) 3-1.
The winner of the Furthest lady was Linda Staveley and the Furthest Youth prize went to Leighton Bennett who during the day also added legs of 17-15-19-13-20-20 and 19 to his tally. Most definitely a star in the making and a very popular young player.
The Blind Pairs winner's were Matthew Pemberton, winning for the second event in a row, this time pairing up with Mark Lawrence.
A total of 118 legs of 21 darts or less recorded on the day plus 23 x 180's with Mark Hartley leading the way with 4, Jim Gordon (3) and double 180 scores coming from Hornby, Bennett, Matthew Green and Wayne Woodhouse.
The highest checkout of the day went to Hornby who closed out 135 followed by Mick Burden 130, Alan Graham 129, Matthew Pemberton 127, Alex Pride 123, Andrew Cooper 120, James Weldon 116 and Pete Smith 107 completes the the line up of players with ton plus checkouts.
Ranking Event 6 is on Saturday 25th March 2017 at Huntington WMC in York. Entries taken on the day with registration closing at 12.30pm for a 1pm start.
Prize money payout is down to 1/4 Finals with a cash prize also for the furthest lady and furthest youth (under 18 years of age) plus highest checkout.
